What causes excessive skin pigmentation?

In most cases excessive exposure to the sun is the main cause.

Sometimes, hormonal fluctuations associated with pregnancy and the contraceptive pill can result in a type of pigmentation known as Melasma or Chloasma.

 

What treatments are available for pigmentation and sun spots?
