Dr Cat's News Update - July 2020 name

Wow, how is it July already? It only feels like a few weeks ago it was March, and now more than half the year is gone!

Our team had a wonderful morning last week refreshing our Basic Emergency Skills course with Emcare, jumping on mannequins to the strains of the Bee Gee’s ‘Staying Alive’ for our ‘DRSABCD’, and getting the latest updates on how to treat choking, anaphylaxis, stroke, epilepsy and more. Our medical team then completed the Advanced Emergency Skills using airway management, oxygen and reviewing our ‘crash kit’.

We were still on our Level 2 ‘bubble’ roster until last week, as when we planned the schedules we were not sure how quickly we would reach Level 1, so it was lovely to pop a lot of team ‘bubbles’ and have the whole team in one place for the first time since going into lockdown!

From this week forward we have a new ‘non-bubble’ roster for the team, so you should hopefully see more availability across both clinics. I’m personally excited to be increasing from 1 day a week injecting to 2 days a week injecting (Monday at Britomart, Wednesday at Takapuna), as my fatigue has been improving. I still get tired very easily and am not yet at my usual high levels of energy, but it’s nice to be making positive progress! I’m so grateful that we have such an incredible team who I know do such an amazing job whether I’m there or not.

Lockdown has shown me the joy of working from home, and I’m a lot more productive, so I’m working from home 2-3 days a week so I can nap if needed. I have to keep reminding myself that it’s only 4 months since my surgery and 5 months since my diagnosis, so I’m actually incredibly fortunate to be doing as well as I am!

We’re honoured that Dr Jenni and I have been invited to be involved in the NZ clinical trial of a new and unique injectable HA product. I was at the launch of Profhilo in Paris 4 years ago, and since then have been hearing excellent feedback from my friends in colleagues in the UK and Europe, where it is used extensively to restore the features of youthful skin, stimulating collagen and elastin, as well as renewing the supportive connective tissues of the face, and stimulating stem cells in the superficial fat layer.

‘Biorevitalisation’ is the key term associated with Profhilo. While it is an injectable HA product, it is completely different to HA fillers - it is stabilised differently, works differently in the tissues, and is injected quite differently: with just 5 injections each side of the face or neck.

Profhilo is a thermally bonded HA, and is the consistency of ‘runny honey’, so we can inject it into 5 specific areas, and within minutes to hours it spreads through the tissues of the face or neck. While there is an immediate small volume effect, it takes days to weeks to see the biorevitalisation changes in the tissues, and a treatment course includes two treatments spaced a month apart. Over 2-3 months, the skin starts to glow, the face gently lifts and a naturally more youthful look develops, without the risk of looking ‘over full’ (not that anyone does with our HA fillers anyway!)

For the trial, we will be selecting 10 patients - 5 for the face, and 5 for the neck - to receive the full treatment course of 2 treatments, with a 3 month follow up after the 2nd treatment. We hope to publish the results in a major medical journal, and will also be using the before and after photos to show results on social media. If you would like to be considered as a candidate, please register as per the guidelines in the newsletter. If you follow the instructions well, you are much more likely to be selected!

We’re also thrilled to be showcasing some of my favourite local businesses in this and future newsletters! Anyone who knows me well knows that I LOVE icecream, and my ‘go to’ de stress/exercise is yoga, so it’s not surprising that we have profiled my favourites as the amazing Giapo icecream who is local to Britomart, and Golden Yogi yoga in Takapuna.

Giapo not only has the best tasting icecream (and a great range of vegan and gluten free options), it is unlike any other icecream experience! Giapo is kindly giving away 100 $5 vouchers, and the chance to be one of four $50 voucher winners. All you need to do is download the Giapo app via the link in our newsletter. I’d recommend taking your family or friends to share the experience with you, especially if it’s your first time!

Golden Yogi studio has been a big part of my energy recovery in the last month or so, as I’ve been doing Kundalini yoga there almost every day, with some scattered Yin classes. I’ve been a big fan of Erin (the owner, and NZ’s best Kundalini teacher) and Golden Yogi since it first opened years ago - the teachers are incredible, and it’s such a beautiful peaceful space.

Kundalini yoga is different to almost all other forms of yoga, using different combinations of movement, sound, breath and posture to build your energy, reduce stress and improve your awareness and creativity. I always walk out of class feeling clear, calm and energised - it’s played a huge role in helping me manage my post cancer fatigue over the last month! I affectionately call it ‘crazy yoga’, as it’s so different to other forms of yoga. You don’t need to be super strong or bendy-flexy, you have your eyes closed for most of the class, and every class is different!

My other favourite is ‘lazy yoga’, or Yin Yoga, where the focus is relaxing your body for 2-5 minutes each, in ‘shapes’ that stretch your fascia and the deep connective tissue between the muscles, improving flexibility and joint mobility, while improving circulation to the tissues to enhance healing. It’s deeply meditative, and I find it a perfect class to do after Kundalini ☺️

They also offer Vinyasa, Hatha, Yoga Nidra and YinYang styles of yoga, and are incredibly welcoming of newbies, whether you have done yoga before or not! Erin normally offers a $10 for 10 days newbie pass, and has generously offered 10 free passes for us to give away. If you would like to be one of the 10, email us via the link in our newsletter.

We’re well into the second half of the year, and it feels like NZ is almost back to ‘normal’ again. We appreciate your support and patience over the last few months as we caught up on all the missed appointments with lockdown, and we look forward to seeing you in clinic again soon!

Loads of love and (proper!) hugs 🤗
